Using ZapBL

Meaning, if you use ZapBL to block email ... its your decision and nothing to do with us. ZapBL is a list of opinions as to where the ZapBL admins do not want to receive mail from. We are not calling anyone spammers, if we receive email we deem as being spam it will be listed. Please review our policy for more details on our listing and delisting.

ZapBL is 100% free to use. Configure it, try it out and tell your friends to do the same.

We don't impose any restrictions on the size of your organiation, how many users you have or how much traffic you do to our nameservers every month. We do however advise you that if you making over 100,000 queries per day you may find it faster to setup your own local mirror of our lists. If your server supports configuring DNSRBL's you can make use of our IPv4 based lookup system. We include some examples below of how to use our service, you will however have to refer to your mail server documentation for exact setup procedures.

Our DNSBL zone name is: dnsbl.zapbl.net.

This DNSBL zone is queried by the mailserver (or even you can do it manually) by reversing the octets of the IP address (for example 127.0.0.2 becomes 2.0.0.127) and prefixing it to the DNSBL zone name.

A query may look like this: 2.0.0.127.dnsbl.zapbl.net

Its not mandatory but we'd like to hear from you if you wish to use our DNSRBL or are currently using it.

If your mailserver supports blocking on different response codes, the below list of codes can be used to distinguish different types of listings.

127.0.0.2 - The only response code for now.

If your server supports configuring RHSBL's you can make use of our domain name based lookup system. We include some examples below of how to use our service, you will however have to refer to your mail server documentation for exact setup procedures.

Our RHSBL zone name is: rhsbl.zapbl.net.

This RHSBL zone is queried by the mailserver (or even you can do it manually) by prefixing it to the RHSBL zone name.

A query may look like this: example.org.rhsbl.zapbl.net

Its not mandatory but we'd like to hear from you if you wish to use our RHSBL or are currently using it.

If your mailserver supports blocking on different response codes, the below list of codes can be used to distinguish different types of listings.

127.0.0.2 - The only response code for now.

For providers who use our DNSBL or RHSBL services, please alert your customers to the fact that you are using our service, you can do this on your support and signup pages and by including a link to our website. Users should be made aware of what email filtering is being done, even better, have them explicitly state they wish it to be done.

Tagging of mail is the safest way to detect spam, you can use ZapBL with SpamAssassin very easily. Add the contents of this file to the end of your local.cf file, or alternatively download the file and put it into your /etc/mail/spamassassin/ directory.
